Kimberly Gotti, 55, and her 23-year-old daughter, Gianna Gotti, were attending an evening matchup between the Oyster Bay and Locust Valley high school boys’ basketball teams, which was being hosted by the latter in Lattingtown, according to NBC News. Gotti Jr.’s son Joseph reportedly plays for Oyster Bay.

A heated in exchange in the stands that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. allegedly prompted a 47-year-old woman to admonish adults who were hurling homophobic and misogynistic slurs at students.

Kimberly Gotti is accused of rushing that woman, punching her and taking the alleged victim’s hat, while Gianna allegedly joined in on the punching, tore at the woman’s hair and later boasted about the beatdown.

The victim reportedly suffered scratches to her face and injuries to her scalp, which she told police felt like it “was going to be ripped off.”

The Gotti women were arrested and spent the night in jail, but pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault, according to NBC News.

A Gotti family lawyer meanwhile claimed Kimberly Gotti was the first person punched in the fracas by the “very belligerent” other woman. He said Gianna only stepped in to help her mother.

John Gotti Jr., who was seen leaving court in Hempstead on Friday alongside his wife and daughter, told CBS News that his family has no plans to press charges.

Gotti Jr. is the son of infamous Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, who died of cancer in prison in 2002. “Junior” ran the crime family while his father was serving his life sentence.

Nassau County Police were unable to provide further information on the case against the Gotti women. They’re due back in court on March 6.

Albany priest accused of slashing ex-lover’s tires after relationship went bad https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/albany-priest-slashes-womans-tires/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 23:24:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7515274 The Episcopal Diocese of Albany is reportedly trying to figure out what to with a priest who’s accused of slashing the tires of an ex-lover and former coworker.

The Times Union spoke to the unidentified woman, who said she became involved in a consensual romance with Michael Greene, 49, shortly after she was hired to help with bookkeeping and travel arrangements at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church over the summer. The alleged victim, who’s in her 40s, said she told the priest she’d become uncomfortable with dating him while they worked together and left her freelance job in August after putting in just 16 hours.

Things went south shortly before Christmas when the pair traveled to New York City and Greene became aggressive while the woman was driving, she said. When she decided to stay alone in the Manhattan hotel room they had booked, the priest became angry and reportedly suggested she consider killing herself.

Weeks later, on Jan. 11, police believe Greene slashed the woman’s tires “with an unknown cutting instrument” while it was in a parking garage. He’s since been accused of criminal mischief and has a Feb. 20 court date. Greene hasn’t entered a plea.

He told the Times Union this week that the incident was a misunderstanding he expects to have resolved “soon.”

The Episcopal Diocese of Albany told the Times Union it was considering repercussions for Greene, but was unaware of the situation before being contacted by the upstate news outlet. They added that Greene, as a priest, is employed by his own church, not the diocese.

Greene did not attend St. Paul’s midweek Eucharist service on Wednesday, according to the Times Union.

The church didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s unclear if they’re aware of the situation.

Chief witness against Rep. Matt Gaetz reportedly working with investigators in sex trafficking case https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/matt-gaetz-witness-sex-trafficking-case/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 21:32:16 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514805 Joel Greenberg, a chief witness in the sex trafficking case against Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, appears to be working with investigators trying to determine if the 41-year-old Republican had intercourse with a 17-year-old girl while serving in Congress.

“I can confirm that Mr. Greenberg is cooperating in a congressional investigation,” Greenberg’s attorney Fritz Scheller told the Daily News on Friday. “The nature of the investigation, as well as the subjects of the inquiry, are questions better left for congressional investigators to answer.”

Scheller clarified to The New York Times the investigation involved the House Ethics Committee.

Greenberg — Gaetz’s one-time friend and former wingman — is said to have provided documents to lawmakers supporting his claim that he witnessed the MAGA firebrand engaging in a sexual act with a teenager. Greenberg is also said to have cooperated in an earlier Department of Justice investigation of Gaetz that produced no charges.

Federal prosecutors have reportedly been looking into whether Gaetz paid for sex with the alleged victim and where the rendezvous occurred.

According to the Daily Beast, the congressman used Venmo to send Greenberg $900 late one night in May 2018. Greenberg allegedly divided that amount among three young women the following morning. One of those recipients was a minor.

The congressman’s old pal pleaded guilty to sex trafficking in 2021 and was sent to prison for 11 years.

Following Greenberg’s sentencing in 2022, Scheller said he was “disappointed” the Justice Department didn’t criminally charge anyone else, but did not give any names, according to CNN.

A spokesman for Gaetz told the Times that the Ethics Committee was looking at the same “unreliable” evidence that was seemingly dismissed by the Justice Department, and warned news outlets against “laundering smears from people in prison.”

Gaetz’s office hasn’t returned a request for comment. The congressman previously denied wrongdoing.

The Hollywood, Fla. native was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016. He’s the son of former Florida State Senator Don Gaetz. Among his most notable achievements as a U.S. congressman was spearheading the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in October.

Colin Jost to host 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/colin-jost-white-house-correspondents-dinner-host/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 21:17:37 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514726 “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost has been hired as the host of the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C. on April 27.

“His sharp insights perfectly meet this remarkable time of divided politics,” White House Correspondents’ Association President Kelly O’Donnell said on Friday while announcing the upcoming gig.

“His smart brand of comedy and keen observation will turn up the heat on the national news media and across the political spectrum,” she continued. “A night of laughs and reflections as our dinner honors freedom of the press as a cornerstone of American democracy. I am beyond excited to welcome one of NBC’s brightest stars to one of Washington’s greatest traditions.”

Along with fellow funnyman Michael Che, Jost has spent the past decade anchoring the venerable sketch comedy show’s fake-news segment, “Weekend Update.”

Jost began his career as an actual journalist with his local newspaper, the Staten Island Advance. He has penned articles for The New York Times and The New Yorker. His resume includes his New York Times bestselling memoir, “A Very Punchable Face.”

The 41-year-old comedian is no stranger to making fun of political figures, thanks to his weekly gig on late-night TV. That included a 2020 impersonation of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who once lived in the same dorm as Jost at Harvard.

Last year’s dinner was hosted by comedian Roy WoodJr., while former “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah did the honors in 2022. The 103-year-old event was cancelled the two previous years on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every U.S. president except Donald Trump has attended the annual skewering of political and media figures. The 45th president has repeatedly stated “Saturday Night Live” should be investigated for mocking him while he was in office.

President Biden spoke at last year’s gathering, where he expressed support for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who’s currently held captive by the Russian government on charges of espionage. Biden is expected to attend this year’s event as well.

Wood Jr. last year described the president as “an 80-year-old man begging us for four more years of work.” Biden and Trump appear headed for rematch in November.

Connecticut man accused of stalking stranger with Apple AirTag on her car https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/connecticut-man-stalking-woman-apple-airtag/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 00:32:07 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7513958 A 25-year-old Connecticut man has been accused of stalking a woman for several weeks after placing an Apple AirTag on her car.

Cops said their investigation into Anthony Magro began in late March when a Goshen, Conn. woman, who claims she never met the suspect, reported finding the tracking device affixed to her vehicle.

The unidentified woman said she began receiving notifications on her iPhone in February that an Apple device was moving with her as she drove, but thought that was due to a family member leaving a set of Apple AirPods in her infrequently driven car. On March 24, she again got notices an electronic device was moving with her.

“After searching her vehicle for approximately two hours with the assistance of a relative, an AirTag device was found attached to the inside of her vehicle’s driver’s side front wheel rim with an adhesive substance,” Connecticut State Police said. Finding the device reportedly caused the alleged victim to fear for her safety.

The AirTag’s serial number led police to a Torrington home once occupied by Magro, but were told he no longer lived there. Cops later made contact with Magro in May, but were unsuccessful in meeting with him despite several attempts.

They finally tracked him down Wednesday in West Haven and made an arrest.

Magro, who’s listed as a Bridgeport resident, has been charged with electronic stalking. He was freed on $10,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned next week.

The victim told authorities “she was not familiar with and had no known interactions with Anthony Magro.”

Missouri coroner accused of stealing money from dead person, mislabeling causes of death https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/missouri-coroner-stole-dead-people/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 23:12:51 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7513816 A Missouri coroner was temporarily removed from office after being accused of stealing money from a dead man’s wallet and mislabeling several deaths from drug overdoses or suicide as being “natural.”

Cape Girardeau County Coroner Wavis Jordan faces three felony counts for providing misinformation, as well as a misdemeanor charge for theft.

In one case, Jordan was given the wallet of a man who died in April, which police said contained money that later disappeared, according to records viewed by The Associated Press. The coroner has denied he took the dead man’s money.

Jordan, a Republican official elected in 2020, could serve 12 years if convicted. He’s set to appear in court on March 8.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey successfully petitioned the court to suspend Jordan from office pending further review of his case.

“My heart goes out to the victims in this case, whose lives have been upended,” Bailey said.

The Associated Press reportedly reached Jordan by phone in his office, where he declined to comment.

Metal object found on roof of Philadelphia home has everyone baffled https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/metal-object-roof-philadelphia-home/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 21:24:33 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7513502 A Philadelphia family that woke up to find what appears to be a large metal door on the roof of their Mount Airy neighborhood home has no idea what it is or how it got there — and neither does the Federal Aviation Administration.

The weathered object appears to be around 8 feet tall, a couple feet wide and 2-3 inches thick with a circular, window-like hole near one end.

“If it really did fall from an airplane, I would have thought it would have gone right through,” Fabian Lima, who lives in the house, told Philadelphia’s NBC 10.

Lima discovered the object on his roof Wednesday afternoon and said the FAA came to examine the object, but had no immediate answers other than telling him to hold onto it until they could complete their investigation. Feds told NBC 10 they don’t believe the rectangular item fell from an aircraft.

According to CBS News, Lima reluctantly batted the unwanted whatchamacallit off of his home with a pool skimmer he extended through a second floor window. It reportedly crumpled a bit when landing on the ground below.

An FAA inspector asked Lima’s northern Philly neighbors if they heard anything that might help solve the mystery. Lima’s home is located just east of the expansive Wissahickon Valley Park.

FCC bans AI-generated voices in robocalls https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/fcc-bans-robocalls-ai/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 19:58:24 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7513295 The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday unanimously banned the use of AI-generated voice-cloning technology in robocalls, effective immediately.

Thursday’s ruling — which targets scammers leading up to the 2024 election — cites the 1991 Telephone Consumer Protection Act restricting junk calls using conventional artificial and prerecorded voice messages.

The FCC is now empowered to fine companies utilizing AI voices and punish service providers facilitating those calls. The newly invoked regulation also makes suing companies that use AI-generated voices easier for individuals and state attorneys.

Companies that don’t abide by Thursday’s mandate can be fined up to $23,000 per call, while people targeted by such calls can sue for up to $1,500 per incident.

Federal regulators said Tuesday they were working with New Hampshire prosecutors to stop a Texas-based company from using fake calls to “spread misinformation to voters, using deepfake voice technology and fake phone numbers to encourage them not to vote.”

Residents of that state, which hosted the nation’s first primary last month, reported receiving AI-generated calls discouraging voters from heading to the polls on Jan. 23 by using a voice impersonating President Biden.

Regulating the use of AI in political campaigns has been met with bipartisan support in Congress, but no legislation has been passed to address the issue.

Despite Thursday’s action by the FCC, Aspen Institute Director of AI and Democracy Josh Lawson told The Associated Press that Americans won’t be completely protected from bad actors.

“The true dark hats tend to disregard the stakes, and they know what they’re doing is unlawful,” he said.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel warned last week that no one’s truly safe from artificially made calls.

“No matter what celebrity or politician you favor, or what your relationship is with your kin when they call for help, it is possible we could all be a target of these faked calls,” she said before the FCC made fake AI-generated calls illegal.

Brittany Mahomes named Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Rookie https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/brittany-mahomes-sports-illustrated-photos-si-swimsuit-rookie/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 17:36:55 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7513165 Brittany Mahomes was made a 2024 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Rookie days before her husband, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, will play in Super Bowl LVIII.

The honor comes weeks after the publisher of the once formidable sports magazine announced massive editorial layoffs were in the works. But that didn’t stop Sports Illustrated from celebrating its 60th anniversary with a new swimsuit issue.

Mahomes, a 28-year-old Texas native, was photographed in Belize, Sports Illustrated said Thursday.

While known for her marriage to last year’s Super Bowl MVP, who hopes to repeat that performance Sunday, Brittany Mahomes is a former professional soccer player. She also owns a piece of the Kansas City Current women’s soccer team.

“I’m truly just so humbled and still in disbelief,” she said of making the Sports Illustrated swimsuit squad.

Sports Illustrated called Brittany Mahomes “the epitome of a modern-day powerhouse” due to her success as an entrepreneur, athlete and mother of two.

The Mahomeses met when they were students at Whitehouse High School in Texas and have been a couple since. She was a junior and he was a sophomore, according to People. They attended prom together in 2013.

The pair attended separate colleges, but both stayed in Texas and remained active in their respective sports. In 2017, they both turned pro. Brittany Mahomes headed to Iceland and Patrick Mahomes was drafted by the Chiefs. They married on March 12, 2022.

Last week, Brittany Mahomes posted a social media photo taken outside Allegiant Stadium, which is hosting Sunday’s big game. That showdown is already surrounded by unparalleled hype.

Pop star Taylor Swift is expected to fly straight from a Saturday night performance in Tokyo to Nevada to cheer on her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who’s Patrick Mahomes’ most sure-handed teammate. Swift’s attendance at Chiefs games throughout the season has become a spectacle in its own right. Swift and Mahomes are sometimes spotted together cheering on their significant others.

More than 200 million viewers are expected to tune in Sunday when the game gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

1 dead after dirt bike collides with Connecticut school bus https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/07/hartford-connecticut-school-bus-dirt-bike-crash/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 00:40:54 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7512612 A Connecticut school bus collided with a dirt bike around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving one person dead in Hartford.

The motorcycle and its driver wound up beneath the bus after the dirt bike blew through a red light, according to Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert, citing video of the collision taken from the bus and nearby security cameras.

The driver of the dirt bike, believed to be an adult male, was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

No other victims have been reported and police said no students were onboard the bus when the deadly collision occurred, according to Hartford station WFSB.

The crash happened at Barbour Street and Tower Avenue, near the Sherwood Zoo at Keney Park.

Dirt bikes are not allowed on city streets, Boisvert said at a news conference, adding that riding such vehicles can be especially dangerous in February “when people aren’t looking for them.”

He couldn’t speak to what kind of permits or registration the bike’s driver may have had. It’s also not known if the victim was wearing a helmet.

The Hartford Police Department has not returned a request for comment.
