“This, in so many ways, is everything the FDNY is about. This was the ultimate teamwork. Some of these members who were literally hanging off of a building together had just worked together that day, and they weren’t even in the same firehouse together,” Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said during the ceremony at Engine Company 39, and Ladder Company 16.

Iron Maiden transported fans to ancient Central America during their set, as the preeminent British heavy metal band of the ’80s performed on replica Mayan Ruins and tore through a 15-song performance that included their classic head-banging hits as well as six songs from their 2015 album, “The Book of Souls.”

The band brought high leg kicks, screaming guitars and more energy than many younger bands of today. Frontman Bruce Dickinson quickly proved that he’s made a full recovery from a tongue cancer diagnosis just a couple years ago, showing off his powerful vocals in the band’s opener, “If Eternity Should Fail,” from “Souls.”

Two “Nameless Ghouls” from the band Ghost.

Guitarists Dave Murray, Janick Gers and Adrian Smith playfully battled each other throughout the evening, often one-upping each other with their complex solos and stage agility.

The metal masters also put on a great pyrotechnics display to the delight of the raucous sellout crowd. The band was constantly surrounded by Hellish fire, which worked well with the Mayan theme. Even Eddie, the band’s zombie monster mascot, looked at home running through the ancient ruins in a CGI video that played before the band took the stage.

Opening band Ghost put on a rocking show as well, and undoubtedly took inspiration from Maiden’s theatrics.

Frontman Tobias Forge, who performs as pope-like demon Papa Emeritus III, played ringmaster and led his five “Nameless Ghouls” through an eight-song set of pure gothic metal.

It was clear that Ghost quickly won over the metal heads in attendance who solely came to see Iron Maiden. Many audience members showed their appreciation for the Swedish band by raising their “devil horns” high in the air throughout the performance, and joined in on the chorus of the band’s final song, “Monstrance Clock.”

The band’s dark lyrics meshed well with the demonic theme of the evening, and the Grammy-winners were a perfect act to set the stage for the main event.

Iron Maiden and Ghost wrap up their tour tonight at Barclays Center.
